If you wish to enter the hairdressing occupation, this is the course for you.
What will I be learning?
You will learn basic techniques needed to enter the hairdressing craft. Hairdressing NVQ1 is made up of 6 units including: Assisting with blow drying and colouring services; Contribution to salon reception duties; Contribution to and maintaining effective working relationships; Supporting and maintaining Health & Safety in the salon; Preparation and maintenance of work areas.
Throughout the course, you will develop your communication, practical & dexterity skills along with confidence when dealing with colleagues, clients and visitors which are essential within the industry of hairdressing.
You will be involved and contributing within practical sessions working along side level 2 & 3 students in commercial client sessions.
In addition, you will develop skills relating to level 2 to further enhance your learning and support progression on to an NVQ 2 course.
During your course, you will also be undertaking Key Skills qualification in Communication which support your hairdressing qualification.
How will I learn?
You will develop your communication and practical skills whilst working on peers and clients.
You will be assessed through observation whilst carrying out practical tasks on clients/assisting the stylist in a realistic salon environment.
You will also be required to complete assignments which will require additional independent learning & research. The qualification also includes written papers that require short sentence answers.
Throughout your course, you will be required to undertake work experience and gain a regular weekly work placement. This will provide an excellent opportunity to expand your experience of working within industry. There are opportunities to take part in trips, visits to various hair exhibitions to develop knowledge on emerging products, techniques & equipment within the hairdressing industry.
You will have the opportunity to become part of the College's Artistic Team and represent the College at local and national competitions which will further support your learning.
What else might I want to know?
You are required to purchase a uniform and suitable shoes that must be worn for all practical sessions. The wearing of jewellery during practical sessions must be kept to a minimum to maintain health & safety.
You will be required to purchase text books for the theory elements of the course and to support additional home study.
Due to the nature of the course, the purchase of a kit for practical sessions is also required for developing skills on peers and clients. You will be advised of the full costs and ordering process at your interview.
What can I do afterwards?
You may progress to an NVQ 2 in Hairdressing at South Devon College or to employment apprenticeships.
