Course Content

The Advanced National Certificate ? Diploma is a Level 3 qualification equivalent to `A` level standard and encompasses both practical and academic study. Students are involved in the study, care and breeding of the animals on site as well as having the opportunity to study animals at off site locations. Visits are arranged to specialist animal establishments to broaden students knowledge of the animal care industry. This qualification provides an excellent route into both employment in the industry and progression onto higher education courses.

Course Features

The course may be studied full-time over one year.

Students have access to a wide variety of species at Cenninpedr Kennels and Pibwrlwyd Animal Unit.

Field trips and visits which are arranged as part of the course and relate directly to the assignments and research that needs to be undertaken by the students in order to achieve certain units.

Students may need to record observations of animal behaviour when monitoring livestock or conducting wildlife animal science experiments; it is recommended that the students have their own camera for visits and practical sessions in order to collect evidence for their assignments / portfolios.

Elected student representatives put forward the views of the class and discuss matters relating to the course during regular course team meetings. Meetings are held each term between staff and students reps.

Students are continuously assessed using a variety of assessment methods.

Learning support is provided in class and by the Study Support Centre as required.
Career Prospects and Progression

This qualification is an excellent basis for progression to Higher Education and to careers in all aspects of the animal care industry.

Modules

In order to achieve the ANC you are required to complete ten Units in total,and pass the externally set examination. The following units will be delivered by the Animal Care team in 2009/10.Core Units Animal Handling and Safe Working, Advanced Animal Health Care, Animal Science, Animal Houseing and Feeding Animal Care Industry Experience Additional Units: Small Business Operations in the Landbased Sector Animals in Society Husbandry of Exotic Pets Health and Welfare of Exotic Pets Kennel and Cattery Operations This full-time course incorporates Keyskills in IT, Communication and Application of Number which are assessed by portfolio evidence.

Method of Assessment

Assessment is by means of assignments, practical assessments and an externally set and marked short answer examination covering the core units.
