- Everyday topics such as fuels, polymers and medicines.
- Atmosphere chemistry to help understand what society can do to prevent global warming.
- The ways in which we use chemistry in agriculture, steel and extracting elements from raw materials.
- How chemistry works in industry.
- The frontier areas, where new and exciting developments in chemistry are happening; e.g. alternative fuels, protein synthesis and drug design.
How is this course assessed?
At AS there are two written exam papers. The third unit is an assessment of your ability to do practical tasks in the lab.
At A2 there are also two written exams. The A2 individual investigation is an exciting part of the course, where you design a series of experiments to investigate a topic of your choice.
This involves planning and performing a series of experiments over a 4 week laboratory period.
What kind of student will do well on this course?
- Independent learners
- Students who can meet deadlines
- Students who can solve simple mathematical equations and use graphs
