About this course
Standard AS/A level entry requirements of five GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths apply. In addition it would be an advantage if you have achieved grade B or above in geography.
Plus a minimum APS Score: 45

Aim This course will appeal to you if you have an interest in and concern for the environment and an interest in current affairs. You will find out about people, places, natural landscapes and coastal processes. You will also have the opportunity to carry out practical fieldwork and develop your investigative skills.
Content During the course you will:
· Understand forces influencing our natural environment
· Understand issues affecting people and the places where they live
· Understand how we affect the environment we live in
· Show an appreciation of current events and key world issues.
Year 1 - AS level
Unit 1: Global Challenges
· Understanding of the ways in which the world is at risk, natural hazards and their impacts. The impacts of globalisation.
Unit 2: Geographical Investigations
· Investigate the issues surrounding the competing interests of the world†s crowded coastlines and examine how rural and urban areas undergo change through regeneration, renewal and rebranding. Field trips form a compulsory part of ASâ€^level Geography.
Assessment for both units is through two written examinations.
Year 2 - A level
Unit 3:
· Contested planet use of resources, energy security, water conflicts, superpower conflicts.
Unit 4: Geographical research
· Students choose a research topic from six options (tectonic hazards, food supply problems, pollution and human health at risk, leisure and tourism).
Assessment is through two written examinations.
Progression/career opportunities
The successful completion of this course will allow students to progress onto a range of Higher Education courses or into careers working in environmental industries for example.
Extra information
Field trips form a compulsory part of this course and students will be expected to contribute to the cost. Financial help may be available.
Screening
Students will also be screened (in the College) and must achieve literacy and numeracy at the level appropriate to the course.
