This is a 10 unit course on the theory and practice of horticulture. It is taught in a realistic working environment at Brinsbury and is designed to give you skills relevant to working in the vibrant horticulture industry, in areas such as landscaping, plant production, science, management, greenkeeping and groundsmanship. There are many opportunities to get involved in practical projects both at the campus and beyond, including working with gold medal winning show teams and designers.

Course programme
How will I study?
There are 10 units on the course with work divided 60% practical / 40% theory based. Units covered include Understanding the Principles of Plant Science; Understanding the Principles of Soil Science; Manage Plant Propagation Activities; Undertake Identification, Selection and Use of Ornamental Plants; Maintain Turf in Parks and Gardens; Undertake Site Surveying, Levelling and Setting Out; Construct and Maintain Timber Landscape Features; Construct and restore walls; Tree and Shrub Pruning and Maintenance; Understand the Principles and Carry out the Practice of Wildlife Population Surveys, Ecology and Conservation. Students aged between 16-18 may re-sit GCSE in English and/or Maths unless a C grade has already been achieved. Functional skills will be delivered in both English and Maths to Level 2 unless they have been achieved already. The opportunity to undertake the Health and Safety Card required to work on site (Self-Funded) and gain PA1 /PA6 spraying cert (Self-Funded).
How will I be taught?
The course will be delivered via a range of methods. Classroom based units will be taught using the latest technology, including distance learning methods for extra work at home. Practical units will be taught in realistic learning environments. Work Experience is an essential part of the course and you will need to be able to prove that this is being undertaken as part of your development, a minimum of 300 hours is mandatory for the course. We may be able to help with placements.
How will I be assessed?
Units are assessed by a range of methods, including both written assessments and practical assessments. There is a research-based project and a work experience unit that is assessed by a work-diary. There are no written exams on this course.
