The people within an organisation are its key source of competitive advantage. A simple and undeniably true statement, and yet today there are still organisations out there that fail to recognise the value of its people (its human resource), and have not yet grasped the important contribution that people make to business success.

The resource of people, when looked after and invested in, are the difference between organisations that are successful and those that are not. However, it is the way in which people are managed, in other words the specific techniques and approaches to people management and development that are fundamental to that success.

Human Resource Management (HRM) contributes to business success by providing a wide range of activities that are designed to make best use of the key resource of people, and overall these activities are integral to the wider role of management.
