Course programme

The first year provides an introduction to key themes in international development and teaches you how evidence is used in development policy. The degree programme becomes more flexible in years two and three, allowing you to combine a variety of modules focusing on various topics, regions and themes.

Year 1

In the first year you will be introduced to contemporary debates and issues in international development, taking the modules:

  • Introduction to Development Studies
  • Evidence in Development
  • Introduction to Economics of Development.

You will also select a number of optional modules from a diverse range offered by the School.

Year 2

You will continue to study economics in development in greater depth, exploring research methods and techniques used by different types of economists. You can also choose from a selection of issue-related or regional modules, covering subjects including gender, politics, social anthropology, and South Asian, Sub-Saharan Africa or Latin American development. There is also an opportunity to study a module from a different School, for example a foreign language.

Year 3

During your third year you will write a dissertation on a development topic of your own choice, supervised by an academic with expertise in the area of research. In addition to this you will continue to define your own learning, selecting a number of optional modules from a diverse range that include ‘Wars, Humanitarian Crises and Aid’, ‘Gender and Development’, ‘Education and Development,’ or a module from another School.

In the spring semester you will take the module ‘Globalisation and Economic Development’. Alongside this you will select options such as ‘Development in Practice’, designed to develop specialist practical skills, ‘Public Policy and Welfare’, or a regional module relating to Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asian or Latin American development, amongst others. You can also opt to do a work placement in the UK.
