Course programme

Mathematics - Use Of (PILOT) GCE A Level

Qualification: AS/A2 - 2 year course

Course type: Level 3 (advanced)

Entry requirements:
  • 4 x GCSE B grades
  • At least a grade C (preferably at higher level) in GCSE Maths

Head of Department: Michelle Sanderson

Course assessment:
  • The first three units (AS) are assessed by a 1 hour written paper, with a pre-released data sheet which targets revision.
  • The A2 course consists of an Application Portfolio (coursework), based on 2 of the units from year 1, a 1 hour written paper on 'Calculus' and a final unit, 'Applying Mathematics' which comprises a 1 & 1/2 hour comprehension paper

What can this course offer me?
  • An innovative, modern Maths course which APPLIES the Maths you learn in real-life contexts and is accessible to all students with GCSE Maths at C (higher preferred) or above
  • Enthusiastic teaching and an excellent pass rate on the previous AS course
  • A flexible course with one compulsory unit and two 'free-standing' units in the first year; this enables all students to have success in at least some parts of the course
  • A new way of learning Maths where the question 'Why are we doing this' is never asked!

What will I learn?
  • Two units of the AS course are free-standing and are applications (statistical, financial, dynamics or decision maths). Success in either of these units lead to a separate certificate with UCAS points.
  • The final unit (Algebraic and Graphical Techniques) is not free-standing, but leads to a full AS qualification when added to the others
  • The A2 course introduces a unit on Calculus, an applications course work portfolio and a final Pure unit called 'Applying Mathematics' which involves a comprehension.
  • All work is based on real-life data and investigation
  • Graphical Calculators and Computer packages (particularly in the second year) are an integral part of the course.

What Makes a good Mathematics - Use Of (PILOT) student?
  • You enjoy Maths and would like to do some post GCSE but feel apprehensive about tackling the standard AS/A2 course
  • You are interested in how Maths is used in the real world
  • You like doing coursework (not needed at AS)

Which other courses link well with this subject?
  • Anything!

Future Opportunities
  • It will give you useful background for many courses both at KGV and beyond as it involves the use of maths in finance, science and business.
  • It is not recommended for those of you intending to do a Maths degree course at university

Is there anything else I need to know?
  • This course does not require the same level of competence in algebra as the main AS/A2 course - just a genuine interest in extending your maths knowledge.
  • PLEASE NOTE: THE A2 PART IS A PILOT COURSE WHICH HAS YET TO BE RATIFIED FOR 2010. IT IS ALMOST CERTAIN TO GO AHEAD BUT WE WILL INFORM YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
