About this course

Preferably prospective learners will have satisfactorily completed the Mental Health OCNW Level 2 course. Alternatively, some evidence of recent study eg Open College Level 2 courses at grades 4/5; GCSEs or similar; or, an ability to demonstrate to tutors, prior to acceptance, appropriate skill/ability.

Introduction:
This course has been designed for people interested in studying issues surrounding mental health, government policy and the care of those with mental health problems.

Study Mode & Location:
This 1 year part time course will last for 3 hours per week. It will be held at Preston College, Fulwood Campus, St Vincent`s Road, Preston, PR2 8UR.

Course Content:
Lectures will be as interactive as possible involving contributions from students in discussion and seminars and use of audio-visual resources etc. You will have to allow additional time for private study if you are to be successful on the course.

The course will include:

  • Concepts, models and therapeutic approaches to mental health
  • Policy, legislations and the criminal justice system and mental health
  • Caring for those with mental health problems and degrees of success.


Assessment:
Assessment will include:

  • 2 Essays (each 1,500 words)
  • 1 Project (3,000 words)
  • An end of course examination.


Careers & Progression Opportunities:
Successful completion of this course and with additional evidence of study you can apply to higher education to study degrees/diplomas in nursing or a degree in social work or related health and social care degrees. This course will, like all evidence of study, enchance your curriculum vitae and therefore may improve employment opportunities.

You will need to have an informal interview with a Adult Admissions Adviser.
Many courses have limited places so please enquire as soon as possible. Following interview, the earliest you may enrol is mid-June.
