Motivational Interviewing (Introduction) By the
end of the course participants will be able to
-
Discuss the concept of motivation and relate it to a model of the way
people change.
-
Make a realistic assessment of a client's motivation.
-
Use their interviewing and counselling skills to elicit and foster the
client's wish to change.
-
Increase their effectiveness with clients who are resistant to
changing risk behaviour.
Continuing to Learn Motivational Interviewing
Research into the
teaching of motivational interviewing has shown that full competence is
only reached when a typical 2-day introductory workshop is backed up by
supervised practice in the workplace (Miller et al 2005). Many
organisations are able to provide this in-house and we strongly recommend
that agencies commissioning M.I. training build such supervision in to
their overall staff development plan.
However, we have found that not
everyone who attends our courses has such help to consolidate and continue
their learning once the course is over. Consequently we are now offering
M.I. supervision that can be customised to individual need. Possible
formats are:
· Telephone coaching
· Critique and feedback on
taped sessions with clients
· One to one supervision.
