In the past 10-15 - years there has seen significant technological advances in neonatal care, supported by an ever -increasing evidence base in this field.

Content outline

This is a three-month module which focuses on the acquisition of essential knowledge and skills necessary for safe, proficient and evidence-based practice in the care of the sick neonate requiring special or high dependency care.. Skills comprise, firstly those relating to normal care of the well new-born and secondly those required for caring for sick neonates in the special care and / or high-dependency unit. These skills were developed based on "Matching knowledge and skills for QIS neonatal nurses" a document by RCN 2012 in collaboration with NNA and BAPM.

The aim of the module is to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge required in order to provide holistic and evidence based care intended for the sick and vulnerable neonate within a family centred setting.

By the end of the module, you will have acquired the essential core skills and theoretical rationale to enable you to care proficiently for the neonate requiring normal, special and high dependency levels of care.

The learning outcomes for the module have been written in conjunction with the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework (NHS KSF) (Dept of Health 2004) using the ''Core'', ''Health and Well-being (HWB)'', ''Information and knowledge (IK)'' and ''General'' dimensions as appropriate.

Teaching content in the classroom will cover the following areas organised into themes for each study day:

The high risk pregnancy and adaptation to extra-uterine life.

Clinical issues 1: Common neonatal problems (thermoregulation, jaundice, hypoglycaemia, infection)

Clinical issues 2: Respiratory problems and care, management of nutrition and fluid balance, psychosocial issues and family care, developmental care and outcome.

Study skills and evidence based care will be taught by small group tutorials. There will be self-assessment / exercises and background reading to complete which will add further depth to the classroom delivery with the opportunity for independent learning.

Non EEA students can only apply as part of a programme, not as a stand-alone module

• You must be a qualified nurse or midwife either in the UK or overseas.

Work/Clinical Placement Requirements

The module requires you to be:

• Working in a suitable practice area
• In a clinical placement
• Have a clinical mentor.

English Requirements

For those students whose first language is not English one of the following qualifications is also required:

• IELTS: 7.0
