NVQs will enhance the quality of services provided by staff, by facilitating staff training and development. They will: Address the skills gaps of the workforce Provide a benchmark for good practice Help to address the training needs of the workplace Assist in the employment, appraisal and retention of staff. Suitable for: Level 3 qualifications are for those who work in a variety of familiar and unfamiliar situations using a range of technical skills. They carry out self-directed activities under guidance and may have limited responsibility for directing the work of others. They apply knowledge and skills in a range of complex areas. Learners must already be employed or in a practical placement for the whole period of the qualification.

Course programme

The NVQ L3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools is a formal qualification for experienced teaching assistants working in primary or secondary schools. The qualification meets the new National Occupational Standards for teaching assistants, furthers career prospects and opens up opportunities to a more diverse and responsible classroom role.

How does it work

The course involves study days one day per month as well as observation in the workplace. Learners plan a programme of development and assessment with their assessor and compile a portfolio of evidence to prove that they are competent and knowledgeable in their work role. The NVQ comprises of six mandatory and four optional units, allowing the candidate and employer to tailor learning to the requirements of a specific workplace.

The six Mandatory Units:

  • Help to keep children safe
  • Support pupil´s learning activities
  • Promote positive behaviour
  • Develop and promote positive relationships
  • Support the development and effectiveness of work teams
  • Reflect on and develop practice development

The further four optional units can be picked from the following areas:

  • Supporting pupil´s learning
  • Meeting additional support needs
  • Providing pastoral support
  • Supporting the wider work of the school
  • Working with colleagues
