Course programme

Devon First Aids’ Paediatric has been particularly popular and a well received training course (testimonials available on request from all of the nurseries that have used our training course).

Current HSE guidelines
recommend that staff only have to be trained to meet the needs of fellow employees, by law, but the guidelines in the Health and Safety First Aid regulations of 1981, state that in educational establishments, entertainment localities etc “employers may wish to include them (the children and the public) in their assessment of needs and make provision for them”.

It is not essential for all staff working with children to do a specialist paediatric first aid course, but many establishments prefer their staff to have completed this course, in order to ensure that they are well-equipped to give First aid to the children in their care, as well as to their colleagues.

Some schools may prefer to use the Emergency First Aid course, (with an emphasis towards children's care in certain topics), especially if it's a senior school. Certainly in all pre-school settings, all staff should have undergone Paediatric First Aid training in order to comply with Ofsted recommendations. The August 2008 edition of “Nursery World” included an article that advises pre-school settings to choose a First Aid trainer that has been granted HSE approval, which was granted to Devon First Aid in September of this year.

The course covers the following main topics, but also covers everything included in the Surestart Criteria for first aid training in childcare and early years settings:

  • Principles of First Aid
  • Assessment (Primary and secondary), of the scene and the patient/s
  • Child and Baby resuscitation
  • Adult resuscitation
  • Child and Baby choking
  • Care of the unconscious child or baby (and adult)
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Shock
  • Fractures
  • Burns and scalds
  • Eye and Ear injuries
  • Medical conditions - e.g. asthma, allergic reactions, meningitis, febrile convulsions
  • First Aid kits and recording and reporting
  • Giving medication

Again, there will be ample opportunity to practice on baby-size and child-size resuscitation dummies, and if needed, to cover any specific medical conditions.

Course Certification
On completion of the 2 days, each participant will receive a Paediatric First Aid certificate, valid for 3 years.
