About this course

You will need grade B or above in GCSE French (or the equivalent). Applicants may be required to take a short test if they have no proof of previous studies in French. To study AS/A2 French as part of an Advanced GCE programme, you will need a minimum of 6 GCSEs at grade C or above.

Fee Information: The College charges a range of fees, primarily Home and Overseas. Under 19s assessed as Home, do not pay the course fees, we only charge a 20 enrolment fee which is refunded if you complete the course. Home students over 19 undertaking their First Full Level 2 (equivalent to 5 GCSE A-C) or their First Full Level 3 (equivalent to BTEC National or 2 ALevels) will be charged 20 enrolment fee plus any examination fees. For Home students over 19 receiving certain state benefits, the 20 enrolment is charged and not refundable. In all other instances, you will be charged the Home-EU or Overseas Fee.

About the course:
The syllabus follows the integrated skills approach including:
* Speaking
* Listening
* Reading
* Writing
A variety of authentic materials and texts are used including:
* newspapers
* magazines
* articles
* cassettes
* videos
The content of the teaching material will be drawn from the following areas:
4 General Topic areas for AS students (first year):
* Youth, culture and concerns
* Lifestyle, health and fitness
* The world around us
* Education and employment
There are 3 General Topic areas for A2 students (second year):
* Customs, traditions, beliefs and religions
* National and international events
* Literature and the arts
Some literary texts may be studied. The classes are conducted in French. The course is modular and all candidates may choose to take 2 modules to obtain an AS Level certificate:
Unit 1: Spoken Expression and Response
Unit 2: Understanding and Writing
Or all 4 modules to obtain an A Level certificate:
Unit 3: Understanding and Spoken Response
Unit 4: Research, Understanding and Written Response
Length of course: 1 year for AS or A2, 2 years if taken consecutively. A one year course is also available for native or already proficient users of the language.
The AS Level course runs on Monday evenings, 6.00-9.00pm.
The A2 Level course runs on Wednesday evenings, 6.00-9.00pm.

Assessment:
All four units are externally assessed by examination in May/June and the exam board is Edexcel.

After the course:
If you are studying A Level French as part of an advanced programme of studies, you could go on to study French at degree level. The course will also prepare you for employment in a French-speaking country.
