Course aims:
This Access course is aimed at those who are interested in Education and would like to train to work in teaching or an education related occupation. You may be currently working or have worked as a teaching assistant, parent helper or volunteer in a school or other youth organisation or intending to so.
Access to Higher Education Diploma courses provides an alternative route to Higher Education. The course prepares you for entry into Higher Education such as a Foundation degree, Humanities degree or Teacher Training course.
On the course you will study the development of education in the UK and current issues in education, as well as complete some work experience in an educational organisation and develop your practical teaching skills. You will also develop your self confidence in your ability to learn and develop the necessary academic skills such as essay writing and research skills, needed for university.
The Access to Higher Education courses have been running successfully at City College since 1991 and we have an excellent record in students progressing to university or employment.

Facilities for students:
Teaching will take place in our main campus where classrooms will be fully equipped with up to date technology. Students have borrowing rights at the local universities of Brighton and Sussex in addition to our own Learning Resource Centre.

Tutors:
The tutors are well qualified, experienced and enthusiastic and understand the needs of Access learners and provide appropriate support and guidance.
There is also support on applying to university from other organisations working together with City College such as Information Days at local universities.

Assessment: Assessment will be continuous throughout the course and will involve a variety of methods such as essays, presentations, projects and examinations.

Entry Requirements:
There are no formal entry requirements but you will need to demonstrate literacy and numeracy at an appropriate level for the course by completing an initial assessment. Students will need to show a good level of motivation, be fully committed to the course and be able to spend a minimum of 5 hours per week studying at home.
If you are intending to apply for teacher training next year you will also need the GCSEs mentioned above.
Applicants must be aged 19 or over.
If English is your second language you will need ESOL Level 2 or IELTS 5.5.

Interview for entry: Interview required

Pre-entry preparation:
There is no required set reading though you may find it useful to read about educational issues in the press and media.
It will also be useful to research courses and universities prior to starting the course to help with your university application which takes place in the first term.

Progression and links:
The qualification is an accepted entrance qualification to Higher Education. If you are intending to apply for teacher training you will also need a GCSE in English, Maths and Science at grade A-C.
The course is suitable for those who are interested in a teaching career or education related career such as Administration and Management, Educational Welfare and Counselling and Career Guidance. It can also lead to many other graduate occupations available to those with a Humanities qualification.

Work experience opportunities:
You will be expected to make your own arrangements for finding a suitable placement for the work experience on the course.
You may need a CRB check for the work experience and must be prepared to obtain one if needed by the organisation.

Home/EU students tuition fees (per year) : 600.00

If you are under 19 on 31st August 2009 you do not have to pay Tuition Fees, the College Registration, Awarding Body Registration or Exam/Assessment Fees. However, you will have to pay any Resource Fees. Under 19s entering Higher Education will have to pay full costs.
