Nutrition And Health NCFE Level 2 Certificate
This vocationally related qualification has been developed in response to concerns about the rising levels of obesity in the UK. This qualification is suitable for health and social care workers who wish to improve their knowledge of nutrition and healthy eating. The course has three mandatory units that will provide students with an understanding of the nutritional needs of different clients. Once a student has completed a unit, they will be able to: UNIT 1 Explore principles of healthy eating
- Understand how an unhealthy diet is associated with lifestyle diseases
- Identify which foods provide sources of energy
- Calculate your own energy requirements
- Identify foods from each of the five food groups
- Understand the role of nutrients in maintaining your health
- Identify how a variety of cooking methods can affect the nutritional values of food
UNIT 2 consider nutritional needs of a variety of individuals
- Understand food sources of key nutrients for children, young and older people
- Understand the importance of key nutrients
- Plan balanced meals for children, young and older people
- Understand nutritional recommendations for children, young and older people
- Identify special dietary requirements
- Understand the different barriers to healthy eating
UNIT 3 Use food and nutrition information to plan a healthy diet
- Understand what information must be displayed on food labels
- Identify the nutritional information that must be provided on labels
- Understand your guideline daily amounts of energy and nutrients
- Calculate the energy provided by certain foods
- Understand the role of food additives
- Compare your food and drink intake to recommendations of the Balance of Good Health
The course is work based, with a tutor visiting the student in the workplace to provide support and guidance.

Assessment:
Workbook based assessment and observation of practice.
Progression Routes:
Students may progress onto the Health & Social Care NVQ Level 2.
Career Options:
