The MRes in Sport and Exercise Science is designed to give you the opportunity to develop key research skills focused on sport and related research.

Most of your study will involve an independent research project supervised by an established researcher within the School, with the rest based on a core research skills module.

Teaching methods include lectures, workshops, seminars, discussion groups and meetings with your supervisory team. All taught modules are supported by online material.

You will work on your project in our refurbished sport and exercise laboratories, excellent modern sports facilities or in collaboration with local community organisations with the support of an existing research group with good community links.

About this course

The majority of your course will be taken up by an independent research project, which will offer 120 credits.
The remaining third of the course consists of a core research skills module – which you will take at the beginning of your first year of study – and an optional module. Each is worth 30 credits.

For full-time students, this will run concurrently with the research project. Part-time students must complete the skills module prior to starting the project.

The optional module may be selected from a list which features further research skills and subject-related academic modules, including: Designing and Implementing Survey Research; Research to Evaluate Quality, Impact and Effectiveness; Muscles, Movement and Exercise; Gait, Balance and Posture; and Managing the Healthy Athlete; and Sports Rehabilitation: Injury to Optimal Performance.

If you complete the Essential Research Skills module and an optional module, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate.

To achieve the award of MRes in Sport and Exercise Science you must successfully pass both taught modules and mount a successful oral defence of your dissertation.

This course will provide you with an excellent grounding if you are seeking a career in the increasingly competitive research environment, as well as providing a base for further study to MPhil or PhD level.
You will benefit from your association with this dynamic and demonstrably successful area of UEL research.

The Applied Sports Sciences Research Group focuses on how sport and physical activity impact on social, psychological and physiological outcomes. It has steadily increased its peer-reviewed research since being established in 2011.

While this course is aimed at students wishing to go into scientific research, it also equips you with skills that will be of vital value to you in a wide range of careers.

You will be an applicant of proven suitability for any job requiring motivated individuals with good independent and team-working skills and demonstrable ability in the creation, synthesis, analysis and communication of data and information.
