About this course

Candidates need to be in possession of a Certificate in Education (post compulsory) and must be in paid service as teachers/trainers/tutors within the lifelong learning sector to facilitate work-based learning. Candidates also need to evidence their performance at a minimum of Level 2 in literacy and numeracy.

Who is the programme for? This programme is designed to meet the needs of teachers within the lifelong learning sector, with particular reference to individuals wishing to study at this level. The programme will provide an opportunity for people to further develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of teaching within the lifelong learning sector. This will be both on a personal and professional level. Students will be encouraged to use their workplace to make the link between theory and practice and become more effective practitioners within their own setting.

What will I study? The first year consists of four Level 1 modules: * Practice-based Professional Subject Development - 36 Credits * Developing Reflective Professional Practice - 24 Credits * Research Methods - 12 Credits * Using Technology to Enhance Learning and Teaching - 12 Credits The second year consists of three Level 2 modules: * Mentoring within the Life Long Learning Sector - 12 Credits * Leadership and Management Issues - 12 Credits * Supporting Individual Needs - 12 Credits

Entry to the Programme?

How is it assessed? Assessment is continual via seven written assignments, one attached to each module. Two modules are self-managed although tutorial support will be available for the assignments relating to these. A presentation of material will be required also in on of the second year modules

Future prospects? On completion of the programme it is expected that students will be able to progress onto a BA (Hons) in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (subject to validation) which will require one further year of study. Progression routes will then exist to an MA in Education and then a professional doctorate.

When will the programme start? The programme will start in September 2010

How long will it take? This is a part time programme which will take two academic years to complete. Attendance of one afternoon per week will be required.

What about the Money? St Helens College is committed to providing value for money higher education programmes, therefore programme fees for Honours Degrees and Foundation Degrees for 2010/11 will be 2,100* per year for full time programmes.
