1956 saw the heroic but doomed Hungarian uprising against domination by the Soviet Union, an event encouraged by U.S. anti-Soviet propaganda in the preceding years. Meanwhile France and Britain tried to re-assert their crumbling empires through an attack on anti-colonial nationalism in North Africa and the Middle East: and the U.S.A. inserted itself into the vacuum created by the retreating empires. We will explore these events using political cartoons and some contemporary newsreels; and through tutor led inputs and discussions.
