Surface pattern: design and decoration

What I would highlight: The teacher was very helpful. I got some useful links to stamp makers, printers that will print my work. The best thing that I learnt was how to create a pattern by drawing on an A4 paper, cutting it into 4 pieces and then sticking it back together and drawing another motif in the centre. This was the most interesting thing I got from the course. To be completely honest, I didn't like the Photoshop much because it felt like I was cheating. I prefer to just draw by hand and display whatever I have drawn as the finished article. Photoshop transforms things so much, it feels like it's not really my work anymore.... though it does produce beautiful things. I was told I can use the facilities for an academic year, so I hope I can still use Photoshop in the library until August 2018?? The course let me know what was possible with Photoshop. There was a mix of abilities and some interesting people on the course.
What could be improved: A lot of class time was wasted scanning in drawings. I think it would be better if the course outline instructed people with scanners to scan in their work before class, so as not to waste time. If the course was not on consecutive days, I would have been able to do this. A lot of time was also lost in tidying up on days when paint was used. It took almost half an hour just to scrub things clean. I didn't receive a course outline after signing up for the course. The other students also said the same and those who had taken City Lit courses before said they usually receive a course outline online before the course begins. It would be great if this could be forwarded to me. I would recommend adding in extra information to the course outline. I am slow at drawing and perfecting designs, so I would have preferred to have drawn things before the class so that they were ready to work on before I got there. I felt like I was behind and rushing and didn't get to print out as many things as I would have liked because I was slower than the others with drawing. My USB stopped working on one of the days and so I couldn't work on anything without the teacher helping me and using her USB. My USB works, just not with Photoshop, but I didn't have Photoshop beforehand to know this. It would be good to tell students to check that their USB will work when saving from Photoshop. The only reason I wouldn't recommend this course is because it's very intensive. It would be better run on weekends across several weekends. I finish work at 5:30pm and literally had to run to get to classes at 6pm and it was exhausting doing this for a whole week. It was a bit too much for me. I don't think I will take any full week evening courses again. I felt light-headed and faint during classes because I didn't have time to eat before the class and so was going 9 hours each day without eating. This is no fault of the course, but just means I wouldn't recommend this course for people who attend fulltime work. I also don't have any arty friends, so don't have anyone to recommend it to!
