Course programme

3D Design explores the many exciting and creative opportunities that exist in the design and creation of objects and products. It challenges students to balance conceptual thinking and intellectual engagement with social and environmental issues, physical experimentation and realisation through materials, making and manufacture.

Course structure

You can choose to take a three-year BA(Hons) degree or a four-year MDes integrated masters-level qualification.

Professional work placements/industrial experiences (MDes only) are, where possible, tailored to support your individual interests and include engagement with world leading design organisations and individuals within an integrated programme of professional and business practice studies.

Areas of study

You will experience an expansive range of approaches to design that includes product, spatial and furniture design, sustainability, CAD/CAM, lighting and materials design. Project content often transcends specific disciplines and encourages individual enquiry into social, cultural and issue-based subjects as part of a rich and informative journey to becoming the director of your own unique and relevant approach to design.

Career and progression opportunities

Recent graduates have worked with individuals and companies as diverse as Nokia, Habitat, Tom Dixon, Donna Karen, Levis, Adidas, Paul Smith, Yamaha, The BBC, Virgin, Pinewood Studios, Warner Brothers, Disney, The V&A, Science and Natural History Museums.

Students regularly win awards of national and international significance, for example, our students have been British Council Award winners, they feature in leading journals, magazines and newspapers like the Guardian, the Times, Blueprint, ICON, New Design and the Independent and have gained opportunities to exhibit their work at prestigious venues globally such as the Design Museum, Tate Modern, The V&A, 100% Design and Milan Furniture Fair.

Graduates have gone on to work in furniture design and architectural practices, in film and television production, trend prediction and styling, exhibition design, sustainability consultancy, product design, advertising, interior and retail design, museums and government departments.
