This course covers the skills required to administer basic first aid in a canoesport environment. It includes dealing with basic medical accidents and element of CPR. Suitable for: This course is useful for those involved in canoesport who would like a basic level of First Aid. It also fulfils the requirements for an 8 hour first aid qualification, a pre-requirement for many coaching awards.

Course Aims
The aims of this course are:

- To develop an understanding of basic first aid required for those involved in canoesport

- To provide an individually tailored learning experience with nationally qualified coaches and
instructors

Skills Covered

Outline Programme

8.45 - 9.15 am Arrive, registration, introduction to the basics of first aid, vital signs, dealing with minor medical incidents

1.00 pm Lunch

2.00 pm CPR

5.00 pm Review and depart

All of these areas will be covered in a practical way during the course, giving you the opportunity to learn from the staff and other course participants alike.

It is important to note that the above outline programme is a guide. Times may vary due to weather conditions or other reasons.

Our Staff
The instructor(s) who will work with you are all highly experienced and qualified. Tollymore prides itself in the knowledge and experience that its full time and part time staff bring to its courses. Our staff are all keen hillwalkers, mountaineers and paddlers and some are involved in Mountain Rescue Teams You may well have met them in the hills in the past or will bump into them in the future on days when they are not working!

All are obliged to attend annual staff updates and training courses

What do I need to bring?

The following list is a suggestion of what you should bring. Waterproofs and rucksacks may be borrowed from our extensive stores. You should bring the following:

  • Walking boots
  • Waterproof jacket
  • Waterproof trousers
  • Warm outdoor wear (fleece is ideal)
  • Hat
  • Gloves or mitts
  • Small first aid kit
  • Personal medication
  • Notebook and pen

Catering
Your course is fully catered – soup and sandwiches are provided at lunch time.

What next?
Having completed this course, you should have an understanding of the basic first aid techniques required to deal with most minor medical emergencies likely to be encountered during the course of general canoesport activities. You may decide to develop your skills further, and could look at courses such as ‘REC Emergency or REC Standard’.
