Course summary:
English Language at this level is very different from GCSE. It combines well with modern languages, the social sciences and most subjects in arts and humanities. It has proved popular with students following options in Business Studies and Law. Increasingly, students opting for Sports Studies are taking up this subject and it is an excellent choice alongside Biology for students hoping to pursue a degree in Speech or Occupational Therapy.
Course content:
A2 English Language seeks to develop the analytical and evaluation skills acquired at AS level. You will learn about the origins, development and variation of language through exploration of a wide range of language varieties, including:
* English over time
* Diversity in English
* Written and spoken child language

Assessment procedure:
This course is divided into two distinct units:
Unit 3: Language Diversity and Children†s Language Development
(25% of A level award)
This unit is assessed by examination lasting 2 hours and 45 minutes. The paper is divided into two sections which cover the two areas of the syllabus.
The questions will present you with data relating to the language issues studied during the course. You will respond to short data-response, focusing them on specific aspects of the data. You will then analyse and comment further on their your observations in a longer response.
Unit 4: Investigation and Presentation (25% of A Level award)
In this unit you will demonstrate your skills as independent researchers and writers through submission of coursework portfolio.
You will identify an aspect of language suitable for a research investigation and collect data to be analysed for a specific purpose. In your completed investigation you will present data analysis and produce a report making reference to any relevant sources.
