Introduction 2 years full-time
This A Level subject fits well with many combinations of subjects, sciences and humanities, and is appropriate for any future career aim. It is looked upon well by employers and HE institutions alike.
English Language builds on the skills that will have been covered at GCSE level but takes them further into the history, development and current use of English, not just in this country, but around the world. It requires students to develop powers of analysis of both spoken and written language and further develop the standard of their own written English. It is recommended that students have a good grade in English at GCSE.

Course Units AS LEVEL - YEAR ONE Year One leading to the AS examination is divided into two units:

· Categorising Texts (2 hour written examination, 30% of the A Level marks). This unit provides an introduction to the study of language and focuses upon three specific social contexts: Language and Power, Language and Gender, and Language and Technology.
· Creating Texts (Coursework 20% of the A Level marks). This coursework unit provides candidates with the opportunity of creating two pieces of original writing, with accompanying commentaries, in different genres for different audiences.

A2 LEVEL - YEAR TWO Year Two leading to the A Level examination is divided into two units of assessment:

· Developing Language (2½ hour written examination, 30% of the A Level marks). Students will build upon the knowledge and skills acquired during Year One and will also be introduced to: Child Language Acquisition where students will examine the early stages of language development, social and communication skills and other issues associated to the development of language, and Language Change where students will look at the history of the English language from 1700 to the present day.
· Investigating Language (Coursework 20% of A Level mark). During this coursework unit students will produce both a language investigation and an informative media text.
