The aim of this syllabus is to give you a knowledge and appreciation of the richness of the most widespread language on the planet. To achieve this you will explore many examples of prose (English fiction and non-fiction; formal and informal speech; the language of newspapers and so on) poetry and drama. You will study the varying ways English is used for different purposes, settings, readers and audiences.

What modules are covered?

The new specification will enable you to develop integrated literary and linguistic analysis. The set texts will be analysed using the appropriate terminology and you will develop your writing skills to be able to write fluently and coherently in response to questions.

AS Level:

Unit 1 Views and Voices (Written examination, closed book, 1 hour 30 minutes) will cover:

Point of view and genre in prose, the forms and functions of the poetic voice.  Methods of language analysis will be integrated.

 Unit 2 People and Places (Written examination, closed book, 1 hour 30 minutes) 

A2 Level:

Unit 1 Telling Stories (Written exam, open book, 3 hrs) 

Unit 2 Exploring Conflict (Written exam, open book, 3hrs) 

Unit 3 Making Connections (Non-exam assignment

How will I be assessed?

AS = 2 examinations. A Level  = 2 examinations plus 1 piece of coursework

Application and successful interview and required grades.

What are the entry requirements?

Minimum qualifications: Full level 2

Minimum of 5 GCSE's achieved at Grade C or above to include English/English Language and Maths.  Grade B in English preferred.

Offers are subject to a satisfactory School Report.

Other subjects you may wish to study the skills you will develop and acquire in A Level English Language and Literature underpin and complement many other subjects.

English and Maths

English and maths qualifications are vitally important for future employers and universities, so the government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills.

Entry Level / Level 1 and Level 2: We’re here to help you on your journey, so if you do not achieve grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths, then you will study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

Students who achieve a D grade will be placed on the relevant GCSE programme, while students who achieve an E or below will be assessed to ensure they are placed on the right study programme for their ability.

Level 3 programmes: You will need to meet the course entry requirements specified on the course information above. For the majority of our Level 3 courses, students will need grade A*-C in GCSE English and/or maths. If this is not specified in the course entry requirement, then you may be able to study English and/or maths as part of your college course.

A Level English Language & Literature is valued highly by employers and Higher Education admissions tutors. Good reading and writing skills are essential whatever career path you wish to follow.

Fees

Course tuition fees are free for UK students under 19yrs.

All students may be charged for materials e.g. equipment, clothing etc.

UK students aged 19 and over will need to pay tuition fees as well as any materials, registration and exam fees.Some adults may be eligible for free tuition.Please contact us for more fee information.

The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan

If you are 24 or over at start of this course, you can apply for a new loan to cover the course fees. There are no repayments until the course is completed and you are earning £21000 or more. Therefore if you earn up to £21000 a year there’s nothing to pay back. If you earn £22000 a year your loan repayments would be as little as £7 per month. Call us for more information.
