Unit 1 Molecules and cells
This unit includes cells and organelles; molecules; enzymes; chromosomes and the genetic code; protein synthesis.
Unit 2B Exchange, transport and reproduction
Unit 2H Exchange, transport and reproduction in humans
This unit includes exchanges with the environment; gas exchange in plants and animals; transport in flowering plants and animals; adaptation to the environment; sexual reproduction in plants and animals; placental development and birth in humans.

Unit 3 Energy and the environment
Paper 01 or T1:
Candidates will undertake an individual investigation which will be teacher assessed and moderated by Edexcel.
Paper 02 W1: (available for international centres only).
Candidates will take a written paper as an alternative mode of assessment for the individual investigation (International private centres and international private candidates must take this written alternative).
Paper 03
This half-unit includes modes of nutrition; energy flow through ecosystems; recycling of nutrients; energy resources; human influences on the environment. (This paper is compulsory for all candidates.)

Unit 4 Respiration and coordination and Options
Core material - this includes respiration and coordination in living organisms.
Options - candidates will select from one of the following:
Option A Microbiology and biotechnology
Option B Food science
Option C Human health and fitness.
Unit 5B Genetics, evolution and biodiversity
Unit 5H Genetics, human evolution and biodiversity
This unit includes autotrophic nutrition; biodiversity and classification of organisms; patterns of inheritance; continuity of species and speciation; succession and stability in ecosystems and applications of gene technology.

Unit 6 Synoptic and practical assessment
Paper 01 or T2:
Candidates will undertake an individual study which will be assessed partly by the teacher and all written reports will be marked by Edexcel.
Paper 02 W2:
Candidates will take a written paper as an alternative mode of assessment for the individual study. (International private centres and international private candidates must take this written alternative.)
