Biotechnology encompasses the latest techniques in biological molecules, cells and organisms and applying knowledge of these to problems arising in health, disease, industry and the environment. As a discipline, biotechnology continues to expand as technology develops. We will teach you to think like a scientist and arm you with the essential skills and knowledge to work across the breadth of biotechnological processes that impact on our lives, from food production to fermentation technology.
You will discover and explore the importance of biotechnology in the rapidly developing fields of pharmaceutical, food and agricultural product production. Upon graduation you will be well prepared for a range of exciting research careers.

Course programme
In Year 3 you will examine green biotechnology which investigates renewable energy sources and applications of micro organisms in pollution remediation as well as the principles, practise and applications of plant and animal biotechnology. You can also select from a choice of specialist modules that introduce a range of important biotechnological applications like gene therapy, plant transgenics, drug design and environmental remediation.
The fundamental role of the biotechnologist as the 'maker' of a product is explored in the Innovation in Biosciences module which crosses into our Product Design and Engineering courses and includes input from prestigious industry partners.
What will you gain?
Throughout the three year course you will develop essential skills in laboratory and fieldwork and build detailed knowledge of research methodologies.
