Psychology explains the scientific findings that underpin our ability to understand and predict human behaviour. The course aims to allow students to develop and demonstrate a deeper appreciation of the skills, knowledge and understanding of psychology, to increase students' interest and enthusiasm for the subject and develop their interest in progression to higher education and vocations in psychology.
At AS level students will be introduced to the Social (obedience and prejudice) and Cognitive psychology (memory and forgetting).
At A2 three approaches are introduced, the Psychodynamic, the Biological and the Leaning approach.
These constitute unit 2. In unit 3, students will be able to select two out of the four following applications, Criminological psychology, Child psychology, Health psychology:substance abuse, Sport psychology.
Psychology offers students several routes for progression. Entry to degrees in Psychology related Medical & Social Courses, Management/Personnel work, Media Studies and Business Studies.
Qualification explained
A-Level courses are divided into two parts. In the first year you will study two units of a subject leading to an AS (Advanced Subsidiary) qualification. In the second year, you can take a further two units at A2 in the same subject to gain a full A Level. (In some subjects, the courses are divided into 3 rather than 2 units at AS and A2.)
