The combined English Language and Literature course provides students with a valuable opportunity to explore English from both linguistic and analytical perspectives. Not only does the course provide an exploration of literary texts, drama and poetry, but it invites students to observe the effects of language in social contexts. The course requires that students also study spoken language in both literary and real life forms.
Through the study of this course, students will have the opportunity to 'respond creatively to texts, both in coursework and examined units.' AQA Specification B.
The examination board for this qualification is AQA.

Course Units AS LEVEL - Year One Year one leading to the AS examination is divided into two units: 1. Introduction to Language and Literature Study (1½ hour exam, 30% of A Level mark). The examination relates to the study of an Anthology which is provided by the exam board and is developed around major literary genres as well as non fiction texts. 2. Themes in Language and Literature (coursework 20% of A Level). Students will undertake a two part assignment focusing on a pair of chosen texts. A piece of creative writing forms part of the assignment. A2 Level - Year Two Year Two leading to the A level examination is divided into two units of assessment: 1. Talk in Life and Literature (2 hour exam, 30% of A Level mark). The study of this unit will centre upon spoken language through the analysis of a play and of real life speech forms. 2. Text Transformation (coursework 20 of A Level mark). Here students will undertake the study of two literary works. The work will then be transformed into different genres. A choice from prose, poetry or drama is provided at this point.
