Why should I come to Pendleton College?
English Language is an extremely accessible course that appeals to students from a wide range of backgrounds. It has an excellent results record and students who commit themselves to the subject stand to achieve highly in this area. You will be taught by enthusiastic and experienced teachers and will be involved in the production and analysis of a very wide range of both written and spoken texts ranging from magazine writing and journalism to scripts and fictional writing.

What will I study?
English Language involves the technical study of language and looks at the structures and components that go into making a piece of communication. You will need to become skilled at some challenging new areas including grammar and structural analysis of texts. Year one will cover:

  • Creative writing - fiction
  • Investigating spoken language
  • Analysis of written language and the presentation of attitudes / bias in texts
    • Historical language
    • Creative writing task - non-fiction
    • Spoken language

    What will I achieve?
    English Language is an excellent course for students who are interested in a wide range of different spoken and written language texts. Students are encouraged to develop their own interests and topics in coursework and will develop both their creative writing and analytical skills. English Language combines excellently with a wide range of other subjects. It can be a strong foundation for careers in journalism, law, advertising, and the creative industries.

    How is the course assessed?
    In both years one and two assessment is carried out by a combination of examinations and coursework.

    What else will I do?
    Students can expect to experience a variety of English enrichment activities including university visits, study days and speaker visits.
