English Language is an extremely accessible course that appeals to students from a wide range of backgrounds. You will be involved in the production and analysis of a very wide range of both written and spoken texts.

What will I study?
In the first year you will study a wide range of printed and recorded passages to assess how the language works and how writers target audiences.
· Introduction to the language of texts. You will study how language is used within texts in relation to different purposes and audiences. A strong focus will be on how writers and speakers use language to convey ideas and feelings. You will study a wide range of literary and non-literary texts and relevant language frameworks and linguistic features.
· Original writing and exploring spoken language.
You will submit a coursework folder of approximately 3,000 words. This is divided into two sections:
Section A: Original writing.
You will produce a piece of creative, original writing in a fictional, 'literary' mode accompanied by your commentary in which you analyse your own approaches to this.
Section B: Exploring spoken language.
You will focus on the spoken language of the media and produce an analytical study of an area that interests you.
In the second year, the focus is on analysing and evaluating language modes and contexts. You will undertake a language investigation and complete a writing assignment of your own.

How is the course assessed?
Year one - one exam (21/2hrs)
Year two - one exam (60%) coursework (40%)
