Course programme

Information and Communication Technology
Level: AS and A Level

Board: AQA

Method of Assessment
Over the two year course, three of the four modules are assessed by exams.
In your first year you will be expected to use a range of software to develop projects which will then be examined.
You will be expected to take evidence of analysis and testing in to your exam, and you will be examined on this and other theory elements. In the second year you will develop a major project. This coursework comprises 40% of your A2 marks and so it is crucial for this subject that you enjoy coursework.

Why choose this course?
You will already have an interest in information technology. If you have studied for GCSE, GNVQ IT, DiDA or equivalent at school (although this is not a requirement) this subject choice will extend your skills into a more in-depth use of software tools to solve business problems. You will look at the practical use of information technology in the business world. As the course has a large practical element, you must also be good at meeting deadlines.

What will I study?
For the AS Level, you will be taught the in-depth use of Microsoft Excel and other software, you will learn to create simple projects; and, using the skills developed in these applications, you will solve a practical task. Your work on these projects will be documented as a report, and you will take parts of these reports into your exam. You will also study the theory of ICT systems and their application. In your second year you will extend your practical skills by working with the Microsoft Access software to analyse and design the data model for a problem of your choice. You will combine the theory content studied in this year with practical skills on your coursework project.

Huish Extra
The team runs a web design enrichment activity open to all college students and will be useful for students who have little or no web site production skills. This opportunity could be the forum to acquire additional skills which could be used in your A2 year coursework.
