Method of Assessment
In each of the two years you will have two theory exams (40% each), two internally assessed practical exams and additional practical assessment (totalling 20%).

Why choose this course?
Physics will be of interest if you are curious about the world around you, how things work and the fundamental nature of the universe. An A Level in Physics is of high value for potential university applications and for future employers. As a department we aim to maintain excellent results in an approachable, supportive environment.

What will I study?
The first year of the course covers mechanics, materials, waves, electricity, particles and quantum phenomena (the behaviour of things on an atomic scale). The second year includes advanced mechanics, fields, electro-magnetic induction, thermal properties, radioactivity and nuclear physics.

You will also study one topic in detail: planned to be Turning points in Physics which covers the discovery of the electron, wave particle duality and Einstein s theory of Special Relativity.

It is recommended that you study Maths, at least to AS Level. Note that to study Physics or Engineering at university you must take Maths
A-Level.

Huish Extra
Students can take part in regular extra Physics sessions for advanced year 2 work such as the Physics Olympiad (including a student who represented GB in the International Olympiad in Summer 07) and Stretch and Challenge problems.
We offer individuals support in their applications to universities for places on Engineering and Physics courses,
including many Oxbridge successes. Students are also encouraged to spend a week at university at the end of Year 1 on taster courses for Engineering, Physics or related courses.
