About this course

On this course you will:

Develop a critical awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes.
Gain an understanding of the structures of authority and power within the UK's political system and how these may differ from those of other political systems.
Develop critical thinking skills and enhance your ability to interpret, evaluate and comment on the nature of politics.
Acquire knowledge of the structures of authority and power within the political system.

Upon successful completion of this home learning course you will receive an A-Level qualification. Both AS and A2 level courses and examinations must be successfully completed to gain the full A level. This syllabus has been chosen specifically because it is the best suited to distance learning.

This A-level builds on the course content of GCSE, although it is not necessary to have this qualification before undertaking this A-level.

Course programme

This course consists of four units:

Unit 1– People & Politics
In the study of this first unit, this unit will help you to explore issues relating to the following topics:
  • The different types of democracy
  • Electoral systems and electoral reform
  • The changing party system and recent General Elections
  • Referendums
  • Political Parties
  • Pressure Groups
The focus of this unit is to introduce you the concept of democracy and some of the different kinds. You will also look at political groups and parties.
Unit 2– Governing the UKThe study of the second unit of this course, you will explore issues relating to the following topics:
  • The UK Constitution and constitutional reform
  • Parliamentary and political sovereignty
  • Parliament
  • The Executive
  • The Judiciary
This unit will introduce you to the major governmental processes within the UK. It will encourage you to develop a critical understanding of the role and effectiveness of key institutions and the relationship of these institutions in the context of multilevel governance.
Unit 3A– UK Political Issues
Topics/Modules included on Unit Three:
  • Economic Policy
  • Social Welfare, Health and Education
  • Law, Order and Criminal Justice
  • Environmental Policy
This topic looks at key policy issues in the UK, particularly those that have affected the outcomes of general elections or stimulated public debate.
Unit 4A– EU Political IssuesTopics/Modules included on Unit Four:
  • Impact of the EU on the UK
  • European Integration
  • EU Institutions and Their Relationships
  • Domestic Policy Issues
This topic examines the political issues that have arisen as a result of the process of European integration, and the impact of the EU on the UK. It also looks at European institutions and their interrelationships and the European economic and social model.

By the end of the A-Level you will have begun to successfully investigate key areas of Government and Politics and the importance of rule by government in modern society. By the end of the full A level you will have also investigated several key topic areas in much greater detail and practised some of the research skills that are so necessary to success not only in this field but in other interrelated fields.
