Course overview

Religious Studies involves a critical study of religious ethics and the philosophy of religion.

AS Level (year one)

Unit One : Philosophy of Religion

In this unit you will examine:

Ancient Greek influences on religious philosophy (e.g. the thinking of Plato and Aristotle).

Judeo-Christian ideas concerning the notion of God

Four traditional philosophical arguments for the existence of God (i.e. ontological, cosmological, teleological and moral).

The problem of evil and psychological and scientific challenges to religious belief.

Unit Two : Religious Ethics

In this unit you will critically study:

Ethical theories including Natural Law, Kantian Ethics, situation ethics, Utilitarianism and religious ethics.

How the ethical theories listed above view ethical topics such as: abortion, euthanasia, genetic engineering and war and peace.

A Level (year two)

Unit Three: Philosophy of Religion

This unit explores philosophical issues relating to human identity and destiny, the nature of God, miracles, religious language, religious experience.

Unit Four: Religious Ethics

This unit involves a critical study of meta-ethics, free will and determinism, conscience, virtue ethics, environmental and business ethics and sexual ethics.

You will learn through a variety of different learning experiences.

How you will be assessed

Examinations are in January and June.

AS/A Level exam results are excellent.

Extra supervised workshops are available for those who need them.

Teaching groups are often small around 15 at AS.

RS supports the religion module of AS Philosophy.

RS can be taken with any academic or vocational combination.

For those with university in mind, RS can lead to a variety of different courses. The most obvious are RS, Comparative Religion, Philosophy, Anthropology, Divinity and Theology, but entry to any arts or humanities course can be gained with an RS A Level.
