The Academy: S.P.A.C.E. (Sheffield Psychotherapy and Counselling Education)

History

Previously the Programme Director, Gail Evans, was Head of the Counselling Studies Unit at Sheffield Hallam University where she taught for approx 17 years, as did Professor Colin Feltham. Other members of the team also taught there. Following changes in government funding SHU was forced to close the specialist counselling courses and the team took voluntary severance to deliver them privately, with SHU's support and encouragement.

We have many years of delivering high quality training which has a good reputation in the region and with placement providers. Many of our past students now hold posts in health, education and the voluntary sector and many have successfully embarked on private practice (see our 'sister' organisation Cornerstone Counselling and Therapy Centre for example).

All tutors are experienced both as practitioners in a wide variety of organisations and as tutors. We also bring in specialist speakers for certain topics. Professor Colin Feltham is very well-known as an author in the counselling field and Gail Evans's Counselling Skills for Dummies book has received excellent reader reviews (see Amazon).

Areas of specialisation

Future developments will include Clinical Supervision training. The Counsellor Development Forum (open to any interested person to attend) offers a range of subject talks through the academic year.

All staff are very experienced practitioners and tutors.

Talks, workshops, taster modules, full courses in counselling skills and Professional Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. Also workshops and courses for allied professions and for the public, for example Parenting, Self-esteem etc.
