If you are aged between 19 - 24 and you dont have a qualification equivalent to 2 A levels, you can study any level 3 course for free. These courses may also be free for people on means-tested benefits.

Course Content: The Access to HE Diploma is an alternative route into Higher Education for mature learners. It provides a good foundation for progression into Higher Education because it includes not only subject specific knowledge, but also study skills and professional development. It also includes Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy for those who do not have these essential qualifications. The programme was designed specifically for mature learners who have few formal qualification and who have had a break from education.

The qualification is an Access to HE Diploma consisting of standardised, regional, core and optional units. This programme makes stringent requirements on learners in terms of time commitment and academic development and as such may take two years to complete. The exception is learners who have Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy qualifications already.

Foundation Year (Level 2)

This is the first stage of the Access to HE Diploma. Learners who successfully complete this year will be awarded the Progression Award Diploma allowing progression onto the second year.

Understanding: Family Relationship; how Children Learn; Mental Health; Stress and Stress Management

Literacy:

Reading Strategies, writing for Meaning, Creative Writing, Speaking and Listening

Professional Studies Units:

Developing Personal Learning Skills - This will include note-taking, essay writing and other key skills

Individual in Society Units:

Understanding Aspects of Citizenship; Young People; Law and Order; Prejudice and Discrimination; Diversity in Society

Numeracy and I.T:

Developing and Using Research Skills, E Mail, Word Processing Software, Using Calculations

Literacy:

Reading Strategies, Writing for Meaning, Creative Writing, Speaking and Listening

Diploma Year (Level 3)

This is the second stage of the Access to HE Diploma. Learners who successfully complete this year will be awarded the Access to HE Diploma. The structure of this year is shown below:-

Health Studies Units:

Development in Health Policy and the NHS, Ethical Issues in Health, Health Promotion, Health Inequalities in Britain

Social Science Units:

Psychological and Social Aspects of Health, the Family, Social Stratification, Psychology of Health

Professional Studies Units:

Research Skills and Study Skills

Science Units:

Diet and Digestion, Gas Exchange and Transport, Coordination and Control, Maths Level 2

Numeracy and I.T:

Research Project, Organisation of the Body, Pathogens and Disease, Influences on Health

Special Features: This programme is specifically designed for adults who have been out of education for some time and as such, a special feature of the programme is the individualised support that learners receive alongside the main programme. For example, some learners are dyslexic, but have nevertheless succeeded in fulfilling their ambition to study at a higher level. The programme is also designed to accommodate the needs of parents and people who have flexible work patterns.

Progression: This pathway leads onto Dip HE Nursing and Degree course in Nursing and Midwifery. The local universities are: Manchester, Salford, Manchester Metropolitan University and Huddersfield. Please note that Midwifery is very competitive. You will need an A level and Access to HE if you are to apply to Manchester University. You must also have Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy qualifications before any University will accept you.

Entry Requirement:
In offering places on this programme we will take account of a number of factors including.
· Skill Level
Whether you have Level 2 Literacy and Numeracy and IT qualifications.
· Life Experience
We expect applicants to have substantial experience outside education, such as working, or bringing up children, which suggest that they have the maturity and enough self-organisation to cope with the Access course.
· Understanding of the Access Course
We will discuss your career goals and how the programme fits in with these, the time commitment required for the course and financial issues.
· When and how long
The programme will usually last two years with the exception being learners who already have GCSE Maths and English Grade C or above, or any equivalent Level 2 qualification. The route most appropriate for you will depend not only on the skills you already have, but also your level of confidence and previous experience. During the first four Groundwork weeks of the programme we will explore which point of entry is most appropriate for you. This will be based on initial diagnostic assessment and a range of subject specific assessments.
