Access to Higher Education Diploma - Health Care Professions

Course Aims:
This course is designed to enable those over 19 the opportunity to gain the necessary academic qualifications for entry into nursing or the other professions allied to medicine e.g. Occupational Therapy, Operating Department practitioner,Midwifery, paramedics. It can also be used to gain entry to degrees in a range of applied social science subjects.

Course Content:
Students will study a range of Health Care subjects to gain a nationally recognised Access Diploma, which allows entry to Higher Education.

The course consists of a common core: English, Maths*, Study skills and research skills. PLUS: a number of compulsory Health science units PLUS: a number of other health related units from the social sciences.

Vocational Units will include: Organisation of the body: Pathogens & Disease: Co-ordination and control: Ethical issues in health: Health promotion: Psychological perspectives

*Learners with grade 'C' or above at GCSE in English & Maths will be exempt from these units

Progression:
Successful students could go into Higher Education into Nurse Training or other professional courses linked to health, e.g. Occupational Therapy/Midwifery. Students could also go on to appropriate Degrees.

Awarding Body:
Open College Network North West Region Levels 2 & 3

Exam:
There will be a mix of continuous assessment methods essays, exams, case studies, etc., - building to a portfolio. There will be no external exams.

Qualification:
A recognised QAA Access Diploma

Level:
60 credits;-45 at level 3, the remainder at level 2

Duration:
The course lasts for 33 weeks and will be offered over three days.

For the Access programme there are no specific entry requirements. However acceptance is subject to interview to ensure that each applicant:
* Has aims that match the programme
* Has the ability to benefit from the programme and
* Has the potential to achieve
Students who do not have the recommended GCSE grades (or equivalent) will be required to undertake a short written assessment prior to an offer of acceptance being made
Students whose first language is not English should have IELTS 5.5 or equivalent. Any learners who do not have a sufficient level of written English would be advised to complete relevant ESOL qualifications prior to enrolling on an Access to HE course.
