Access to Social Work & Social Professions

Many Access students feel they have not yet fully developed their potential and the programme offers them the chance to get to grips with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to succeed in Higher Education.

Study Sociology, Psychology and Criminology and progress to study on a variety of degree courses including Social Work, Social Policy, Youth Work and Social Sciences - often leading to careers in the Social Services, the Housing Sector, Employment Services, Health and Welfare Services and the Criminal Justice System. Social Work degree courses often require students to have GCSE Maths and English at Grade C or above (some will accept alternative level 2 qualifications).

You will need GCSE Maths or GCSE English grade 9 - 4 (A* - C) as a minimum before applying for this
course. This is because most degree courses now require L2 in Maths and English e.g. GCSEs at grade 9 - 4 (A* - C), in addition to the Access diploma. However it is strongly recommended you have both. The Access programme is designed for students who wish to return to study with a view to going on to Higher Education so we need to make sure you are well prepared for this starting point.

If you need to resit GCSE Maths or English, alongside the Access programme, you will be required initially to complete a diagnostic test in English/Maths prior to the start of the course, to judge suitability.
Please research HE requirements very carefully. A STRONG COMMITMENT IS NEEDED AS THE COURSE IS VERY INTENSIVE.

Acceptance onto the Access programme is conditional on you:
* Completing a research task over the summer, including a draft personal statement
* A satisfactory reference
* Attending taster days: Tuesday 2nd July - Thursday 4th July 2019

We want you to achieve to the very best of your ability at CRC. To make this happen we offer both learning and personal support by specialist staff tailored to meet your specific needs.

Assessment is by coursework and examination. There will be at least one assignment for each unit (four units per subject). These assignments may be written such as essays / research projects and oral e.g. presentations.

The Access programme takes one year, starting at the beginning of September and finishing in late June the following year. In addition to timetabled classes, it is expected that students will complete at least 15 hours of further independent study per week.
