Course programme

Do you have a creative eye and would you like to gain basic skills in accessory design? Perhaps you have thought about creating your own accessories, but need some guidance. During this course you will develop studio-based design, research and portfolio building skills, whilst learning about basic accessory design, construction and trimmings across two areas: Bags and Headpieces.

Choose from two basic bag patterns and get creative with headpieces; designing and making fabric/jewelled hairbands, attach fashionable and decorative veils.

Some fabrics will be provided (silks for flower-making and various print and plain cottons for bags). However if you have particular fabrics you would like to use please bring them on the first day of the course (see materials list for more details).

Topics covered:

  • Design is in the detail with accessories! You will learn a range of embellishment techniques, considering both textural qualities and use of colour.
  • How to make a bag from one of two patterns provided
  • Designing and making fabric/ jewelled hairbands with decorative veils attached
  • Traditional Flower-making tools will be available for anyone keen to incorporate this area of Couture Design into their work
  • Research and design development

  • Outcomes:

By the end of the course you will leave with at least one finished piece (for example one bag or item of headwear) and have had an opportunity to try other techniques. Plus a sketchbook of ideas for your portfolio for further study and design development.

    Who should take this course:

Experimentation and creative development are key, so if you have lots of ideas and can hand sew then this class will be suitable.

    Level:
    Beginners

    Entry requirements:

This course is low-tech, so no previous machine sewing or pattern-cutting skills are required, however you should have hand-sewing experience.

Please note: This course is for students aged 18 and older
