Course programme

FIRST YEAR

DISCIPLINES
The first half of the first term of the first year is devoted entirely to basic classwork, which provides technical support for the coming rehearsal processes and ensures the proper honing of skills.

Class may be given in:

-Voice
-Movement
-Singing
-Historic Dance
-Textual interpretation and analysis
-Alexander Technique
-Poetry Speaking
-Physical Theatre
-Tap and Flamenco
-Stage Combat

These classes represent 60% of the course content.

PLAYS
During the remainder of the first year, in addition to the classwork, students may also expect to be tutored in the playing of:

-20th Century Playwrights
-Russian
-Shakespeare
-Restoration
These are workshop performances which are closed to the public.

SECOND YEAR

DISCIPLINES
During the first two terms of the second year the emphasis in classwork shifts to include disciplines and techniques peculiar to the contemporary performance industry:

-Acting for radio and the screen
-Modern Dance: Tap, Jazz, Ballroom
-Clowning and Illusion

PLAYS
-Jacobean
-English-speaking drama post-Second World War
-A new play production

Second year productions are open to the public. Performances of audition duologues are also shown in a West End Theatre and in the LAMDA Linbury Studio to which agents, casting directors and industry professionals are invited.

PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION
Unique to LAMDA is a play-making process which is conducted throughout the course. Early in the first term students are introduced to a writer and director. Together, using periodic weekend workshops, students will continue with the creative team to create a play which will be performed publicly at the end of the course.

Students eligible to work in Canada and the USA are able to join others in their final year in performing a programme of duologues which LAMDA arranges to be presented in New York and Los Angeles, for agents and casting directors.

Recent graduates of the course include Rory Kinnear (winner of the Laurence Olivier & Ian Charleson Awards) and Ruth Wilson (BAFTA & Golden Globe nominated for Jane Eyre).
