About this course
This course is for both low-budget filmmakers who want to learn affordable tools, for transforming their own footage and those looking to explore animation, motion graphics, grading or special effects.
Some experience of a professional non-linear editing package (Premiere, AVID or FCP) is necessary, and a knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop is useful but not essential.
Some experience of a non-linear editing package (preferably Adobe Premiere) necessary, and a knowledge of Adobe PhotoShop is useful but not essential. You will be using After Effects 7.0 with the Production Bundle extension.

Adobe After Effects can offer budget film-makers access to increasingly powerful effects, which not so long ago were only available to exclusive post-production companies. This intensive course is aimed at those who have experience of non-linear editing and want to learn how to apply professional-looking treatment, titling, motion graphics and visual effects to their productions. Course participants will undertake a hands-on project designed to introduce all the essentials of this powerful package. Once students have completed this course, they will be armed with the basic knowledge to begin using and exploring After Effects on their own.

Subjects covered will include:
Understanding Projects and Compositions, Transform Effects, Animating and Working with Layers, 3D Video Effects, Text and Titling, Preparing and Importing Footage, Masks and Transparency, Keying and Compositing, Time Remapping, Colour Adjustment, Distortion Effects, Particle Effects, Working with Audio

Day 1.
Introduction to course project and capabilities of After Effects
Projects and compositions
Settings and preferences
Capturing footage, resolution and compression issues
Effective project management
Importing still footage and applying transform effects
Animating transform effects using keyframes
Acceleration and deceleration in Animation
Organising compositions and folders, and layers
Applying basic 3D effect to footage and animating
Applying and animating various colour effects and blurs
Day 2.
Replacing footage
Using masks and transparency
Time remapping
Various methods of keying and compositing
Further image adjustment
Vector painting
Text effects and Animation
Advanced titling
Applying creative audio
Distortion effects
Putting together a finished production
Rendering and compression
Summary and (if time) further experimentation with any specific effects
Students will share a PC (max. 2 students per PC)
