What is Adult Karate?
Karate is a Japanese martial art where a typical beginners class will include warm up exercises, kicking and boxing to pads, the techniques are then put in a simple form and practiced to each other. Training is fairly vigorous but it is assumed that beginners are unhealthy to start with and the fitness will come with training. After around 6 weeks students move on to strikes with elbows and knees and basic joint locking, as time goes by instruction will include a full range of strikes, kicks, locks, throws, chokes, strangles, dislocations, pressure points, groundwork, breathing and posture exercises, mental awareness, concentration, self defence and meditation. The student wears a white karate suit and is graded with a different colour belt as they progress through the syllabus up to black belt (average time 3 - 5 years) where they then progress in 'dan' grades.
