About this course

The first 3 years of your Apprenticeship will be taught through day release for one day per week at the Flackwell Heath Campus. The last year of your course will be delivered in the work place by your allocated college assessor.

Your Advanced Apprenticeship Qualification will enable you to progressonto a work based foundation degree and you may be able to gain credit for the work you have already done.


The Advanced Apprenticeship programme consists of four elements:

Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electro technical Systems and Equipment (Buildings, Structures and Environment)
You will complete an NVQ Diploma at Level 3 which will be assessed in the work place by a college assessor and will recognise your workplace competence. This is a combined competence and knowledge qualification.

Level 3 Mandatory Units
• Understanding Health and Safety legislation, practices and procedures (installing and maintaining electro technical systems and equipment) (6 credits)
• Understanding environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems (4 credits)
• Understanding the practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment (Electrical Installation) (6 credits)
• Understanding the principles of planning and selection for the installation of electro technical equipment and systems in buildings, structures and the environment (8 credits)
• Understanding the practices and procedures for the preparation and installation of wiring systems and electro technical equipment in buildings, structures and the environment (10 credits)
• Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for the termination and connection of conductors, cables and cords in electrical systems (9 credits)
• Understanding principles, practices and legislation for the inspection, testing, commissioning and certification of electro technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment (8 credits)
• Understanding the principles, practices and legislation for diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electro technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment (6 credits)
• Understanding the electrical principles associated with the design, building, installation and maintenance of electrical equipment and systems (12 credits)
• Applying Health and Safety legislation and working practices (Installing and Maintaining Electro technical Systems and Equipment (3 credits)
• Applying environmental legislation, working practices and the principles of environmental technology systems (3 credits)
• Overseeing and organising the work environment (Electrical Installation) (3 credits)
• Planning, preparation and installing wiring systems and associated equipment in buildings, structures and the environment (6 credits)
• Terminating and connecting conductors, cables and flexible cords in electrical systems (4 credits)
• Inspecting, testing, commissioning and certifying electro technical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment (6 credits)
• Diagnosing and correcting electrical faults in electrical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment (6 credits)

Electro technical Occupational Competence (AM2)
An examination fee is required to cover the cost of this element of the apprenticeship. Details are available from the College on request.

Functional Skills
If you do not hold the relevant grades at GCSE, you will complete functional skills at College and you will be required to take an exam depending on your current qualifications in:
• English level 2
• Maths level 2
• Information Technology level 1
