Course Aims:
To provide students with an insight into many rewarding careers with the Society, Health and Development sector. This course introduces students to the principles and values underpinning all of the different professions and will show them how the different services fit together.
The level 3 Diploma will appeal to high achievers who need an education programme that nurtures their talents and also offers them the opportunity to develop wider skills for the workplace such as team work, communication and interpersonal skills that enable all people to achieve in life and work. It will also provide a clear progression route to higher education.
Course Content:
The Diploma has three components:
1. Principle learning
2. Additional /Specialist learning
3. Generic Learning
1. Principle learning - there are seven core themes aimed at developing knowledge, understanding, skills and attitudes relevant to the sector and students are given opportunities to apply these to work roles or situations in realistic contexts.
There are seven core themes for this principal learning as follows:
The sectors
The principles and values pf the sectors
Interpersonal skills
Partnership working
Healthy living
Growth and Development
2. Additional/specialist learning
Students can choose to deepen their knowledge of their chosen specialist subject by taking a more specialist course in the childrens workforce sector for example play and learning.There are a range of additional qualifications that can be studied alongside the principle learning which are also level 3
and equivalent to one A level .
3. Generic learning
Students will study generic units including:
Personal, learning and thinking skills
Functional skills in English, Mathematics and ICT
A project to demonstrate the skills and knowledge they have acquired
At least ten days work experience in their chosen field
Progression:
Successful students can lead onto University to pursue a career in the sector. This sector accounts for 15% of the entire UK workforce.
These could include:
The Children's Workforce - teachers, youth workers, playworkers, nursery nurses
The Health Industry - Medical staff, health workers, healthcare scientists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists
The Community Justice Sector - community support officers, community police, probation officers, youth offending teams
Adult Social Care - social workers, domiciliary care workers

Students' work is continually assessed throughout the two years through a combination of internal and external assessments.

Notes:
This course requires students to pass a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.
The Diploma in Society, Health and Development does not mean students have to pursue a career in this sector. A Diploma gives students relevant transferable skills that will be welcomed by Universities and employers.

Two years full time study
