Course programme

Course Content

The course is delivered through a mix of lectures, workshops, self-study and individual and group project work. In lectures, key concepts and ideas are introduced, definitions are stated, results and techniques are explained, and immediate queries are discussed. Workshops and projects are used to foster practical engagement with the taught material.

The dissertation plays a key role in deepening understanding, in developing research and literature review skills, and in applying knowledge and skills gained in the programme to plan, execute, and evaluate a significant investigation into a current problem area related to the design of multimedia artefacts.

Typical Modules

3D Computer Graphics and Advanced Animation

The aim of this module is to cover advanced 3D and associated technologies including generative 3D modelling, real-time graphics, stereoscopy, animation and human movement and machine acquisition techniques. Complex forms will be visualised, simulated and tested on screen. The module will also explore the latest developments in rapid prototyping virtual reality and other forms of visualisation.

Multimedia and Interaction Design

This module will extend your knowledge and skills in the theory and practice of human computer interaction, using multimedia production tools and object based scripting, particularly for producing interactive content. It will provide theoretical and practical knowledge of graphic design, photography and video within the context of interactive multimedia and the state-of-the-art technologies revolving around the various interactive possibilities involved with digital media.

Audio Visual Post Production

This module will develop students’ knowledge, skills and understanding of post production and compositing to a professional level, with a particular focus on visual post production, but supported by a study of relevant audio post production techniques and principles.

3D Film Design and Production

This module will provide opportunities for students to develop skills in 3D production and post production technologies, including stereoscopic video capture, processing and 3D display. It will also explore more advanced 3D video acquisition and display technologies such as multi view and 3D holoscopic imaging.

Multimedia Research Directions

This module will introduce concepts of different types of research, present methods to identify research topics and formulate approaches, prepare plans for research and provide guidance on performing research experiments and evaluating novel systems and artefacts. Internationally renowned researchers and practitioners in creative media design also feature guest speakers.

Dissertation Project

This module will enable the students to apply the knowledge, skills and design practice acquired throughout the taught programme to research, develop and evaluate into a novel mixed (real and virtual) media product or service as a major dissertation student work.
