During this course we will focus on three techniques in stake and strand willow basket making. Each week we willfocus on one of the techniques and students will be encouraged to practice in between sessions and to share theirwork in class. The emphasis will be on learning and repeating techniques rather than producing finished items.

Course programme

We will cover the selection and preparation of willow, refining pairing and waling. We will focus on fitching to create
small openwork baskets, rod borders and handles.


This is a practical course. You will be taught by demonstration, individual and group tuition. There will be examples
and pictures to help you.

This is an intensive course where students will be encouraged to repeat techniques between workshops.

Additional information


The Basketry project VC205 is a project led course, where you can explore different approaches to basketry. City Lit also runs short courses in other basketry techniques such as rush, plaiting or random weave. The City Lit Basketry course VA190 is a two year, in depth study of Basketry, next entry is in September 2019.
