About this course

Play through some well-known Salsa/Afro-Cuban repertoire arranged for Big Band.
Distinguish between Latin music styles including Son montuno, Mambo, and Cha-cha-cha.
Understand different harmonic and rhythmic approaches in how to solo in this style of music.

Bring your instrument, and if you play bass, guitar or piano please make sure the Music dept knows you wish to enrol. Rhythm section places are limited.

Course programme

Introduction to Salsa, Son montuno, Mambo, Cha-cha-cha, Bolero and more including their different styles and rhythms
Play through a wide and varied repertoire of Salsa/Afro-Cuban Big Band charts
Learn to solo in this style of music with an emphasis on rhythmic and harmonic development and sight reading.
Learn about percussion used in Salsa, and their associayed rhythms.

You will be taught through practical playing sessions where you will work on Salsa/Afro-Cuban Big Band charts with guidance from the tutor including approaches to sight reading, improvising and learning how to listen and play in a large ensemble in this style of music. You may be expected to practice the charts outside of class.
