Course review:

The American Air Museum Summer Residency Program is an opportunity for middle school history teachers from the USA and the UK to share their teaching practice in a practical and creative environment. Participating teachers will collaborate on originating source-based learning sessions, immersed in the historical setting of IWM Duxford, whilst improving their own knowledge and understanding of the World War II era.

The transatlantic nature of the program mirrors the wartime alliance between the two countries and provides participants with a chance to work with others who have different experiences and perspectives of history education. Participants will gain behind the scenes access to a world-class museum that has an excellent reputation for museum-based education.

The Summer Residency program will last for three weeks and is residential. There will be several trips, including a chance to take part in a weekend break to London, where you will be able to walk in the footsteps of the airmen who visited the city during their leave in the 1940s.

Week 1: Museum professionals, re-enactors and veterans will deliver sessions about Duxford’s history to highlight the range of sources that can be used as effective teaching tools – from period hairstyles to object handling. You will take part in exclusive tours and special lectures at the museum and at significant sites in the area. Trips will include Chislehurst Caves – a labyrinth of underground tunnels that sheltered over 15,000 people during the Blitz – and Bletchley Park – the site of British code-breaking activities during World War II. You will also experience Duxford’s most successful learning programs in masterclasses led by the department for learning.

Week 2: You will work in small teams, drawing on primary sources and the week 1 sessions to workshop learning activities. The best of these will be published and publicized on our website.

Week 3: The final week allows you to put your new skills and knowledge into action by leading a Summer Camp with young people from the local area. You will be responsible for applying and trying out the activities you created in week 2, as well as some developed by the museum, in a practical setting. There will be opportunities for reflection and support to help you hone sessions that you can take back to the classroom. The Summer Residency Program will finish on the Saturday, with a debrief of the previous week.

Accommodation, meals, transport to the AAM and field trips, education resources and entry tickets to different sites are paid for by the museum. Participants will be reimbursed for their transport to the museum from the USA and the UK.

Continuation after the Residency

Upon completion of the Summer Residency, you will be required to produce a brief report reflecting on your experiences of the program. After returning to your school you will be asked to present at a teacher training workshop outlining your experience of the program and how these have influenced your classroom teaching.

Participants also need commit to carrying out a class project on a pre-agreed theme that will encourage students to research and utilise different sources to create a piece of work. During the summer residency program you will be partnered with at least one other participant and this project will form the basis of a virtual exchange program, in which your students will be able to share and discuss their work with each other in a safe, online environment, coordinated through the museum.
