The Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine course is based on areas of clinical practice and professional skills that are relevant to all anaesthetic trainees.

Face-to-face tuition will be provided in cutting-edge aspects of patient care using an evidence based approach to provide knowledge of clinical practice which extends beyond the scope of the training programme and represents many of the most important areas of development for clinical anaesthesia. The course also includes modules which enable students to gain an in-depth understanding of the professional skills essential for a successful career in the NHS.

About this course

This course is intended to provide anaesthetists with the clinical and professional skills they need to achieve high levels of success in consultant practice.

Applicants should have a medical degree plus a minimum of two years’ UK National Health Service experience in anaesthesia. Applicants are normally expected to be in clinical practice throughout the course.

This course is only open to applications from UK/ EU/ Island residents.

Course programme

  • The module content will meet the specific requirements of the course for which the student is registered and will depend on the nature of the student's chosen topic and methodology.
  • A notional 600 hours of independent study.
  • The project may be primary research or a systematic review/meta-analysis. Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies are acceptable. Quality improvement projects including service evaluations are acceptable providing they meet the requirements of the module.
  • In exceptional circumstances, the dissertation may be the development of and justification for a full proposal plus details of project management, governance costing and possible grant application.
For investigative, scientifically focused study, content may include:
  • development of a research question and project proposal
  • a clear search strategy using electronic and non-electronic literature sources;
  • a critically appraised literature review;
  • clearly justified methodology and methods used/to be used for participant selection, (intervention/exposure), data collection and analysis;
  • a scientific style of writing that appropriately reflects the chosen methodology;
  • critical analysis of the literature used to inform the various stages of the research process
  • critical discussion on the project and its findings;
  • the articulation of clear and logical conclusions;
  • appropriate ethical and governance consideration.
